Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC)
The Committee for Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CCSEA), is a
national regulatory body of Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD),
Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying constituted under the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960.Β To supervise and regulate the uses of experimental
animals in research at University or Institutional levels by formulating Institutional Animal
Ethics Committee (IAEC).
Since establishment of IAEC, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry,
SKUAST-J, R S Pura, 181102 working for supervision, control and welfare of animals for the
experimentation in the faculty. Ethical review and approval by the IAEC provide protection
for participants, and also helps to protect the researcher and follow-up the principles of
ethical considerations as per the guidelines provided by CCSEA.
IAEC approval guarantees that all animal research projects are carried out humanely and
ethically conducted in accordance with legal requirements and norms. The IAEC consists of
up of a number of people, including a chairperson, senior scientist or faculty member from
the organization, biologist with experience in animal research, veterinarians practicing animal
care, scientists from outside the organization, a nominee from the CCSEA, an official body in
India, a layperson or non-scientific member who can represent societal concerns, and a
socially conscious nominee. The important mandates of IAEC involve avoiding causing
needless pain or suffering to animals before, during, or after experimentation is a key
component of maintaining them in a way that is appropriate and healthy. The committee
periodically inspects animal facilities, including those that house, feed, and care for animals,
to make sure that animal welfare regulations are being followed. It also routinely supervises
ongoing projects to make sure that approved protocols are being followed. It also confirms
the availability of sufficient facilities for the housing and maintenance of animals, as well as
the provision of hygienic conditions, environmental enrichment, and medical attention.
