Chegu







1.   The Chegu breed is fairly widespread in Himachal Pradesh & north of Uttar Pradesh. A few thousands are also found in Sikkim.
2.   Chegu goats are recognised for their multifarious utility as providers of quality meat (chevon), pashmina the valuable textile fibre, coarse fibre, manure, hide and skin, and milk to a limited extent. They are predominantly white, though greyish red and mixed colours do occur. Chegu goats are medium sized with small ears and horns which are bent upward, backward and outward.
3.   These goats are reared under a small scale extensive and/or semi intensive production system based on free-ranging/grazing on natural pastures, common village grazing lands, fallow uncultivated lands, road-side vegetation and high altitude pastures. Kidding takes place once a year with single births.
4.   Body:  Medium sized breed with compact body and short legs.
5.   Face:  Slightly longer with straight profile.
6.   Ears:  Short and kept laterally.
7.   Horns:  Both the sexes have twisted long horns directed upwards, backward and outward with pointed tips.
8.   Udder:  Small and round with small teats.
9.   Average kidding age:  615.8±23.03 days.
10.   Kidding interval:  272.8±8.4 days.
11.   Annual production of cashmere:  The average cashmere yield/goat is about 120gm with a fibre diameter of 12 microns.
