Toggenburg



1.      The Toggenburg or Toggenburger is a Swiss breed of dairy goat. Its name derives from that of the Toggenburg region of the Canton of St. Gallen, where it is thought to have originated. It is among the most productive breeds of dairy goat and is distributed world-wide, in at least fifty countries in all continents.
2.      This goat breed is famous for milk production and one of the very popular dairy goats originated in the Toggenburg Valley in north-east Switzerland.
3.     These goats are credited as being the oldest known dairy goat breeds in the region. This goat breed performs best in cooler conditions.
4.     These goats have known for their excellent udder development and high milk production. Toggenburg breed is distributed throughout the world.
5.      Other names of this goat include; Toggenburger Ziege, Chèvre du Toggenbourg and Capra del Toggenburgo.
6.     Goat farmers can consider Toggenburg breed for commercial dairy production due to their high production of milk. However, this breed can also be reared and raised for meat purpose.




Toggenburg Goat Breed Characteristics and Performance:-

1.      Toggenburg goats are noted for their excellent udder development.
2.     Toggenburg goats smaller than Alpine goat breeds.
3.      The udder of Toggenburg breed goats is well attached and carried high.
4.      Twinning is common in Toggenburg breed goats and triplets are also possible.
5.      Toggenburg male goat (buck) weighs up to 90 kg and female (doe) weighs up to 55 to 60 kg. When it comes to milk production, on an average they produce 1 to 3 liters per day with fat content of 3.0 to 3.5%.
6.     The lactation period may extend up to 10 months.
7.      Toggenburg kidding intervals though initially long decreased with time to reasonable levels to 302±117 days and the average birth weight of Toggenburg is about 3.25 kg.
