Jersind   Jersey & Sahiwal Cross for beef purposes

Jersey crosses are produced by upgrading/ cross breeding the non-descript / Indigenous breeds of cows with Jersey semen. Jersey crosses are suitable dairy animals for tropical plains of our country. They are medium sized, have better heat tolerance than other exotic crosses and well adapted to our climate. Depending on the milk production potential of our indigenous cows, the Jersey crosses may show 2 to 3 fold increase in milk yield in the first generation.

General Information:
  1. Species: Cattle
  2. Habitat: Temperate countries but the crosses have been well adapted to tropical countries like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and other countries of Indian Subcontinent.
  3. Breeding tract: : In India, the Central Government had come out with different policies time to time to upgrade the local cattle for increased milk production. So every state through its Animal Husbandry Departments, upgrade local cattle by using Jersey semen.
  4. Main utility: Milk for food.
  5. Origin: Different states of India.
  6. Distribution: Almost entire country.
Phenotypic traits:
  1. Colour: usually fawn color with individual breed variability.
  2. Number of Horns : 2.
  3. Visible characteristics: Patches of fawn color, large udder, wedge shaped conformation from rear view, highly developed milk vein.


Different Jersey Crosses are as:
1. Taylor:

a. Cross of Jersey and Shorthorn with local breeds of Patna, Bihar.
b. Crosses of Bos taurus bulls (Shorthorn and Channel Island bulls from the United Kingdom) with local cows by Mr. Taylor.
c. Their coat color is red, gray or black and they do not possess a hump.
d. No published records on the performance of this breed are available.
e. The breed is almost extinct.

2. Jersind.
a. Indigenous breeds viz. Kankrej, Gir, Hariana, Sahiwal and Red Sindhi were crossed to Holstein Friesian, Brown-Swiss, Jersey and Guernsey at the Agricultural Institute, Naini, Allahabad.
b. The results of crossbreeding suggested that Red Sindhi x Jersey crosses had the most desirable traits for Indian conditions.
c. These included, small body size, better adaptability and high fat percentage. The Jersey crossbreeds between 3/8 and 5/8 have been interbred and named as `Jersindh'.
d. Similarly, 3/8-5/8 Brown-Swiss x Red Sindhi crosses have been interbred and named as `Brown-Sind'.
e. Jersindh crosses gave milk yield between 1557 and 1861 kg in first lactation. The breed has shown deterioration over the years mainly because of small numbers and being confined to the Institute farm.

3. Jerthar:
a. Cross done at Bangalore.
b. Cross between Jersey and Tharparkar.
c. ½ Jersey and ½ Tharparkar.
d. Age at first calving: 27.8 months
e. First lactation milk yield: 2714 kg (305 days)
f. Calving interval: 384 days
g. Calf Mortality: 2.4%

4. HF cross with Jersey and Tharparkar:
a. Age at first calving: 31.6 months
b. First lactation milk yield: 2283 kg
c. Calving interval: 460 days
d. Calf Mortality: 8.4%

5. Jersey and Hariana:
a. Done at Haringhata Cattle Breeding Farm, Kolkata, West Bengal.
b. ½ Jersey and ½ Hariana.
c. Age at first calving: 31.7 months
d. First lactation milk yield: 1679 kg
e. Calving interval: 434 days
f. Lactation length: 305 days
g. Milk per day of calving interval: 4.51kg

6. Jersey and Non descript Desi Cattle:
a. Done at Haringhata Cattle Breeding Farm, Kolkata, West Bengal.
b. First lactation milk yield: 1269 kg
c. Age at first calving: 35.6 months.
d. First lactation length: 327 days.
e. Calving interval: 433 days.

Management:
  1. Management System: Intensive
  2. Mobility: Stationary
  3. Feeding of adults: Fodder and Concentrate
  4. Housing: Well developed housing for organized herds.
  5. Feeding system: Stall feeding.
  6. Feeds to be fed: Berseem, oats and mustard are the green fodder in rabi; and sorghum, pearl millet and cluster bean in kharif. Commercial feed can be fed anytime of the year. . Milking cows are provided supplementry feeding in the form of cotton seed, barley and oil cake. Feed is given in soaked form at the time of milking. Calves are reared on whole milk up to 1 month of age after which some green fodder is also fed. Calves are allowed to suck 1-2 teats up to 6 months of age
  7. Feeding of concentrates: 1kg/2kg milk at the time of milking.
  8. Feeding of roughages: 1/10th of body weight per day.
  9. Milking: Should be done 2-3 times a day.
  10. Milking practice: Full hand milking should be done. Avoid knuckling.
  11. Milk let down time: 4-5 minutes.
Benefits of cross breeding:
1. More milk production.
2. Efficient feed conversion ratio (FCR).
3. Economical dairy.
4. Better reproductive traits.
5. Continuity in production.

Major problems associated with health of Jersey Cross:
  1. Mastitis: Being very high yielding cattle, the risk of mastitis is always present.
  2. Calcium Deficiency: The cattle should be supplied with Calcium and Phosphorous supplements to maintain the health of animal.
  3. Genital Diseases: The risk of genital diseases like pyometra, metritis, is always present and should be taken care of.
  4. Milk Fever due to deficiency of Calcium.
  5. Parasitic infestations.
