Cost of chicks.

The cost of the newly hatched chicks varies with market to market and place to place. The base rate of the chicks start from Rs. 23/chick and may vary from Rs. 20 to Rs. 51/chick. As the Project Directorate on Poultry is a government body, the chicks can be obtained from the officials on special subsidy given by the Government of Jammu & Kashmir to the farmers rearing small flocks. Vencobb strain is available with TawiHatcharies which sell chicks at the age of 2-3 days whereas in PDP, Belicharan, Chabro strain is available on subsidy to the marginal farmers.

Breed development unit in Jammu

The government breed development unit is present at Project Directorate on Poultry, Belicharan, Jammu. They use Vanaraja Breed of poultry birds for developing the desired characteristics of Vanaraja in other breeds. Vanaraja is an ideal bird for backyard poultry farming which can sustain the different stressful conditions of the climate and nutrition and may thrive well in Jammu based conditions.
